Founded in 2016

Place Sunnybank was established by Owen Chen and Ping Han, with the support of their assistant Jess Chia. Starting as a team of three, the business has grown into one of the most trusted real estate agencies in Brisbane’s southside.

Prior to founding the company, Owen had already built a strong reputation in the local market, with a client base spanning Sunnybank, Parkinson, Rochedale and
surrounding suburbs.

Industry Recognition

Since then, Owen and the Place Sunnybank team have been recognised by leading industry awards, including RateMyAgent, AREA (Australian Real Estate Awards), and REB (Real Estate Business), ranking among the top agents in Queensland and across Australia.

Real Estate Excellence

A key milestone came in 2022, when the team was awarded:
REIQ Awards for Excellence — one of the highest honours in Queensland’s real
estate industry.

This recognition reflects not only individual performance, but more importantly the collective leadership, consistency, and achievements of Ping, Owen, and the entire Place Sunnybank team.

Built From the Ground Up

Place Sunnybank began with no existing infrastructure.
 
There was no established office, no team, and no built-in client base. Every aspect of the business — from office setup to systems, processes, and client relationships — was built from the ground up.
 
Owen led the sales division, leveraging his expertise in negotiation and market strategy to build trust and deliver consistent results. Ping, on the other hand, transitioned from a corporate investment background into real estate. She holds a CPA qualification and a Master of Applied Finance from The University of Queensland.
 
In the early years, she personally assisted with over 500 auction contract signings, training sales associates while simultaneously building the company’s operational and management systems.
 
Importantly, Ping established the Property Management Department from scratch, laying the foundation for an integrated business model that combines sales  and property management. This enables Place Sunnybank to deliver a full-service, end-to-end solution for clients.

The Reality of Building a Business

Building a business from scratch comes with its challenges.

In the early years, a small team had to take on every role — from sales and client service to marketing, administration, and system development. There were no shortcuts, and no predefined roadmap. Progress came through constant refinement, learning, and persistence.

Through this process, Place Sunnybank developed its core culture: Stay grounded. Focus on doing the small things right.
